Is the tap water safe to drink in Belarus?

In towns and cities, generally yes. WHO and UNICEF put the share of people in Belarus with safely managed drinking water at 93.1% in 2024, and 99.1% had water free from contamination. It's the supply in the countryside that is less reliable.

93.1%
of people in Belarus had safely managed drinking water at home in 2024 WHO/UNICEF: from a protected source, at home, available when needed and free from contamination.

What the official figures say

In towns and cities, 97.5% of people had water whenever they needed it. In rural areas it was 76.8%.

Why a public tap can still be different

Some villages still rely on hand pumps and wells, which sit outside the treated supply. Well water hasn't necessarily been tested, and whatever happens on the surrounding land can affect it.

Check the tap, then tell the next person

Before you drink from a pump or tap, look for a sign and make sure the water runs clear. If you find a reliable one, add it to Fontavio or leave a review describing how the water looked and, if you know, where it comes from.
