Is the tap water safe to drink in France?
Yes. France's health ministry calls tap water the most closely monitored food in the country, and WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water at 99.7% for 2024.
What the official figures say
Regional health agencies take nearly 320,000 water samples a year and run more than 18.5 million analyses on them. The results are published for every commune, so you can look up the water wherever you're staying.
In restaurants, a carafe of tap water comes free with a meal served at the table. And since 2022, buildings open to the public have had to provide drinking fountains.
Why a public tap can still be different
A fountain in a village square may be decorative, or fed by its own spring. The sign tells you which: eau potable is drinking water, and eau non potable means it isn't safe to drink. No sign at all doesn't mean it has been tested.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Stick to fountains marked eau potable and check the spout before filling up. When you find one, add it to Fontavio or review it and mention the sign; it helps walkers and cyclists plan their route.
