Is the tap water safe to drink in Hungary?
Yes. Hungary's national public health centre found drinking water safe and of good quality in 99.8% of the country's towns and villages, and WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water at 100% for 2024.
What the official figures say
Every settlement is tested at least four times a year, and the largest systems every day, for more than 60 measures. The 2024 assessment drew on more than 51,000 samples.
The one known problem comes from nature. In eight settlements, 0.2% of the total, arsenic from the local rock was over the limit, and residents get safe water from container treatment units until new works are finished.
Why a public tap can still be different
Old hand pumps in villages and taps in older buildings may not be on the treated supply, or may run through old pipes. And a dirty or rarely used public tap can spoil perfectly good water.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Check the spout and let the water run before you drink. When you find a good tap, put it on Fontavio or review it, so people walking around Hungarian towns in summer know where to refill.
