Is the tap water safe to drink in Ireland?
Yes, from the public supply. Ireland's Environmental Protection Agency found more than 99.8% of public supply samples compliant in 2024 and says public water is safe to drink. WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water at 96.1% for 2024.
What the official figures say
Local problems do happen. There were 59 boil water notices in 2024, affecting about 95,000 people, and the agency lists 45 supplies serving 497,000 people as at risk and in need of improvement.
Why a public tap can still be different
Where a boil water notice is in place, tap water isn't safe to drink until it has been boiled. In the countryside, homes and taps may be on group water schemes or private wells rather than the public supply.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Check whether there's a boil water notice locally, then look at the tap and let it run. When you find a good one, add it to Fontavio or review it, and update it if a notice goes up or comes down.
