Is the tap water safe to drink in Moldova?
From the piped supply, usually yes. From village wells, no. WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water in Moldova at 75.8% for 2024, and 78.8% of people had water free from contamination.
What the official figures say
Moldova's public health agency advises drinking piped water rather than well water. Its 2021 monitoring found that well water failed the sanitary standards in 97% of cases, with the highest nitrate levels in Anenii Noi, Drochia, Telenești and Ungheni.
Why a public tap can still be different
Wells are a common sight in Moldovan villages, and they're exactly what the health agency advises against. Only drink from taps connected to the piped supply.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
When you find a tap on the piped supply, add it to Fontavio or review it, and say where the water comes from if you know.
