Is the tap water safe to drink in Romania?

In the cities, generally yes; in the countryside, much less reliably. WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water in Romania at 82.2% for 2024: 95.0% in towns and cities and 66.7% in rural areas.

82.2%
of people in Romania had safely managed drinking water at home in 2024 WHO/UNICEF: from a protected source, at home, available when needed and free from contamination.

What the official figures say

Contamination isn't the main issue, since 97.6% of people had water free from it. The rural figure is lower because many homes don't have water on the premises.

Why a public tap can still be different

Village wells and roadside springs are separate from the treated supply. In cities, the pipes in older apartment blocks can affect the water that comes out of the tap.

Check the tap, then tell the next person

Look at the water and the spout before you drink. When you find a good tap or fountain, add it to Fontavio or review it; in rural areas there's often little other information to go on.
