Is the tap water safe to drink in Slovakia?

Yes, if you're on the public waterworks. WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water in Slovakia at 99.6% for 2024, and the public health authority describes water from public waterworks as safe for health.

99.6%
of people in Slovakia had safely managed drinking water at home in 2024 WHO/UNICEF: from a protected source, at home, available when needed and free from contamination.

What the official figures say

Around 89.6% of Slovaks are on the public supply. Most of the rest use their own wells, which are the owner's responsibility and often never tested. Every year on World Water Day, 22 March, the authority offers a free nitrate test for well water.

Why a public tap can still be different

The mountain springs along hiking trails, known as studničky, aren't monitored, and the public health authority describes their quality as unstable. Treat them as untested water.

Check the tap, then tell the next person

Use taps on the public supply where you can, and check them first. When you find a reliable one in the Tatras or anywhere else, add it to Fontavio or review it.
