Is the tap water safe to drink in Spain?
Yes. In 2023, 99.1% of the test results reported to Spain's national drinking water system found the water fit to drink, and WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water at 99.5% for 2024.
What the official figures say
Since January 2023, the national system, SINAC, has let anyone look up the official test results for the network that supplies them.
Bars and restaurants have to serve unpackaged water free of charge if you ask for it, under a law in force since April 2022.
Why a public tap can still be different
Not every fuente is on the drinking supply. The sign tells you: agua potable is drinking water, and agua no potable means don't drink it. Fountains on beaches may be showers, and springs in the mountains are untested.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Use fountains marked agua potable and check the spout. When you find one, add it to Fontavio or review it, for walkers on the Camino and city visitors in the summer heat.
