Is the tap water safe to drink in Sweden?
Yes. Most Swedes get their water from municipal suppliers, who are responsible for its safety, and WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water at 99.8% for 2024.
99.8%
of people in Sweden had safely managed drinking water at home in 2024
WHO/UNICEF: from a protected source, at home, available when needed and free from contamination.
What the official figures say
About two million people, though, drink from their own well or a small private supply, which is common at holiday homes. It's up to the owners to test it.
Why a public tap can still be different
If you're staying in a holiday cottage or travelling through the countryside, the tap may be on a private well. Lakes and streams are untreated, however clear they look.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Check the tap and let the water run. When you find a good public tap at a harbour, a campsite or along a cycle route, add it to Fontavio or review it.
