Is the tap water safe to drink in Ukraine?
Check locally, because the war makes supply unpredictable. WHO and UNICEF put safely managed drinking water in Ukraine at 87.9% for 2024, and the UN humanitarian office says 8.5 million people needed water, sanitation and hygiene support in 2025.
What the official figures say
One household in five has had trouble getting safe water, and more than half of those problems are directly caused by the war. They're worst near the front line, where repairs are hard to carry out and interruptions are frequent.
Only 65.8% of Ukrainians have water piped into their homes, and 34.0% in rural areas, so wells and boreholes are common. The breach of the Kakhovka Dam in 2023 caused well levels in the south to drop sharply.
Why a public tap can still be different
A public tap in an area hit by attacks or power cuts can change from one day to the next. Follow local advice and official notices first.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
If you find a working tap, add it to Fontavio or review it with the date and what you saw. When conditions change this quickly, recent notes from people who were there are the most useful thing there is.
