Is the tap water safe to drink in the United Kingdom?
Yes. In England, 99.97% of drinking water tests met the standards in 2024, according to the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and WHO and UNICEF put the UK's share with safely managed drinking water at 99.8% for 2024.
What the official figures say
The inspectorate's main worries are old pipes in older homes, including lead and nickel, and newer threats such as PFAS. At least 850,000 people in England, about 1.5% of the population, are on private supplies, and only about a quarter of those supplies are registered.
Why a public tap can still be different
A tap at a farm, a remote campsite or a village hall may be on a private supply, and in older buildings the pipes can affect the water from a tap.
Check the tap, then tell the next person
Let the tap run for a moment and look at the spout. When you find a good refill point, especially on a long walking route, add it to Fontavio or review it.
